What is the minimum wage in Australia?
The National Minimum Wage provides a floor for relevant award and agreement-free employees in the national system. Award-covered employees have classification-specific rates, and other rules apply to juniors, apprentices, trainees and some employees with disability. An enterprise agreement also has statutory base-rate requirements.
For the current amount and commencement date, use the Fair Work Ombudsman’s official minimum wages page and Pay and Conditions Tool. This guide deliberately directs you to current tables rather than treating an old article’s rate as a payroll instruction.
Start with system and award coverage
Most Australian employers are covered by the national Fair Work system, but not all. The employer’s legal structure, state and sector matter. For example, some Western Australian employers remain in the state system. Check Fair Work system coverage before applying national rates.
Find the award using the work performed and business context, not just a job title. Check exclusions and any enterprise agreement. A worker paid a salary can still be award-covered.
A practical employer pay check
- Identify the employer and applicable workplace system.
- Find the award or operative enterprise agreement.
- Confirm classification, age and training arrangements.
- Check ordinary hours, overtime, penalties, allowances and minimum engagements.
- Apply the relevant rates from their stated effective pay period.
- Keep time, wage and payment records and review changes regularly.
Casual and public holiday rates
Casual rates and penalty rates may use different calculation methods. Do not add loading twice or assume a universal public-holiday multiplier. See casual loading and public holiday pay.
A salary clause does not remove minimum entitlements
An annual salary or contractual set-off must be assessed against applicable entitlements and instrument requirements. Some awards contain specific annualised-wage requirements, record keeping and reconciliation rules. An “all-inclusive” clause is not proof that every pay period is compliant.
What happens when rates change?
Annual wage reviews and award variations can change the minimum payable. Check the effective date and first relevant full pay period rather than assuming every change applies on the date an announcement is made. Existing over-award pay needs to be assessed against the updated entitlements; it is not an excuse to stop checking.

Frequently asked questions
Is the National Minimum Wage everyone’s pay rate?
No. Award-covered employees generally have classification-specific rates. Enterprise agreements and special wage provisions also need to be checked.
Does a salary mean an award does not apply?
No. Award coverage depends on the work and instrument, not simply being paid a salary. Salary and set-off provisions must comply with applicable minimum entitlements and instrument requirements.
Where can I check current minimum rates?
Use the Fair Work Ombudsman’s minimum wages page, relevant pay guide and Pay and Conditions Tool. Confirm system coverage, classification and the effective pay period.
